between a manager and a leader, traits, characteristics, the functions of a manager and role of a leader in an
organisational context. In addition the assignment will cover concepts and approaches to operations management and

Task 1 – (LOs 1&2)
You work for a large city based organisation (choose any organisation) which is looking to prepare its staff for future
leadership and management roles. You have been tasked to come up with a report on adopting a Leadership and Management Development programme. They have requested your expertise to demystify between what the experts
term ‘Leadership’ and ‘Management’. They would also like to see your recommendations on what you feel about the
Situational and Contingency theories of leadership and how they could adopt the key principles into an appropriate
programme of development for the organisation.
Compile a report (approx. 1000 to 1500 words) explaining;
a) differences and similarities between a leader and manager considering their roles and characteristics.
b) the functions of a manager according to Fayol and how a manager in your organisation performs these functions
using various examples.
